World Elephant Day August 12, 2014

Today is World Elephant Day. Many Elephant populations are endangered because of poaching for their tusks. The Elephant may go the way of the Rhino, which has been poached to near extinction because certain human populations believe that powdered Rhino horn is an aphrodisiac. Do we really have the right to cause another species to become extinct for our licentious needs?

Elephants are known for having emotions. They mourn and honor their dead. They express joy and they express deep sorrow. Baby Elephants have even been known to experience PTSD when they witness the murder of their mothers and family members. They demonstrate compassion and altruism. And they remember their close friends and relatives even after having been away from them for several decades.

Take a moment today and honor the Elephant and if you can find it in your heart, do something for Elephant conservation, whether it’s making a donation or simply spreading awareness.
